Anything we do is merely an attempt to move ourselves toward “Eternity” and/or away from “Extinction”.
This innate desire to move ourselves in one direction or away from the other is the radar of our hardware and it applies to all aspects of our lives. Hence, our feelings of pleasure stem from anything that will move us towards securing basic necessities of life, and anything that can help us achieve this will bring us the feeling of pleasure.
In other words, we seek pleasure because it helps us survive, and to survive is pleasure by itself. The feeling of pain, on the other hand, comes from anything that could compel us to move toward extinction, such as, un-employment, poverty, uncertainty, lack of security, and sickness. Anything that can or even might move us in this direction will bring us anxiety, stress, the feeling of in-security, and pain.
Needless to say, the more we focus our attention toward eternity the more we feel hopeful and happy. The more we focus our attention towards extinction the more we feel hopeless, helpless, and miserable. Again, this feeling is built-in, genetic, and we can do nothing about it. As such, we spend our whole lives minuteby-minute and day-by-day running after two fundamental goals: We either try to move toward eternity, and/or try to move away from extinction. Said differently, we only try to move toward what brings us Pleasure and away from anything that could bring us Pain, and nothing else. Any decision we make, big or small, is just to move us in one of these two directions.
